Visiting the Moira River, Wellington Harbour, and Presqu’ile

January 1, 2014
Happy New Year’s Day! :)

I’ve had almost two weeks off work, and I have had a fantastic time visiting with family, enjoying the season, and getting out (the few times the sun was shining) to take some photos.

On Christmas Eve I went over to the Moira River. I parked in the lot that’s across from the Empire Theatre, and found quite a good number of ducks and geese, including some Goldeneye, Red-breasted Mergansers, and three male Hooded Mergansers. Here’s a photo I got of one of the ‘Hoodies’. :)

The next sunny day (that I had a chance to take advantage of) came on December 29th. I got up early and took a leisurely drive down CR2 to Wellington Harbour. The open waters were full of swans, geese, Mallards, and diving ducks. It was great! :)
I tried to sneak over to a picnic table on the main pier, but of course all the ducks saw me, and beat a hasty retreat! :) So I sat patiently, and eventually the birds started to inch closer. Occasionally one of the diving ducks would surface nearby to where I was sitting, and allowed me to take its photo. Here are a few of the shots that I got.

This is also a male Goldeneye, but this one is in eclipse plumage.

This little beauty is a female Long-tailed Duck in winter plumage.
Long-tailed Ducks are the only ducks that have distinctly different breeding and winter plumages.

While I was at the harbour, I also got this shot of a Mute Swan landing on the water.

On December 30th, I decided to trek over to Presqu’ile Provincial Park. Unfortunately most of the park was closed because the roads were impassable. I was able to get part way in though, and got the following shots.

I captured this cute little female Downy Woodpecker just as it reached the top of a branch.

Another woodpecker that looks very similar to the Downy, is this Hairy Woodpecker. The Hairy is much bigger, and has a longer bill, but the patterns and colours are almost identical.

As I said, it’s been a wonderful couple of weeks, and I am very happy with the photos that I got. I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing them too. :)
